Chicks

Oh just a few things you can buy on the streets of the Philippines. One of my only memories of the Philippines when I was there when I was four years old was having one of these.

Gambling

A simple game, if the block lands on your color, you double your money.

...and look what won!! Slightly serendipitous... we were playing this game for a while, and the one time I decide to pull my camera out, we had our biggest win.

Public Pool

... or something like it.

I asked my uncle to pull over when I saw these boys swimming by the side of the road. I couldn't get over the fact that they were swimming right next to a sewage pipe, until I realized that the water was probably cleaner than the water next to their homes in the background. And like most people I had encountered in the Philippines, they loved having their picture taken.

If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel— as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them— wherever you go.

Squatters

Quick Stats:

80% of the Philippine population survives on less than $2 a day
46 million people are literally starving
Minimum wage is less than $10 a day
One year of high school costs less than $10, yet many still cannot afford it

Squatting is a social and economic problem in the Philippines. Squatters live in self-constructed houses, usually next to rivers contaminated with tons of waste. Most live without running water or electricity. I was completely unaware of squatting before I visited the Philippines. So to see it for the first time, and then to realize just how prevalent it is, was shocking.

I was desperate to get closer pictures but everyone warned that my camera would get swiped.
