Times Square

After a long day of running around the city and stumbling into Carlo's Bakery from Cake Boss, Abbigail and I hopped back on the train from Hoboken, New Jersey and headed into Times Square. By this time it was already 1 am and I was pretty surprised at how crowded it still was since it was a Monday. But what else should I expect from the city that never sleeps.

We ate our lobster tails and cannolis on the bleachers while we people watched and made some gay friends. I took pics with the real Dark Knight and we had our characatures drawn by a friendly old asian man on the street. And I mean, sure, we look like men with giant boobs, but hey, its part of the experience right?

CoffeeShop Musings

  • Aside from used bookstores, I'm obsessed with finding coffee shops. I've always loved watching those yuppies on their laptops who looked like they were doing something important. And now here I am, on my laptop, pretending to look like I'm doing something important. ;)

  • I also decided to give up coffee this week. And I made it a grand total of 3 days.  I have some time to kill on the west side and the allure of a new undiscovered coffeeshop was too hard to resist.

  • I appreciate when coffee shops use silly wifi passwords.

  • I leave for Australia in a week.  I'm so excited, and as usual, not prepared.  I like it that way though, going into a trip with absolutely no expectations makes it so much more fun!

  • I might be more excited for this trip because I'll finally get to reunite with Abbigail! My roommate (former, but I like to think we still live together) and travel buddy.  We lived together for 7 years, so the fact that she's been MIA studying for the bar is a little strange.

  • I love people watching and eaves dropping on strangers' conversations.  Is that creepy?  Yesterday I overheard some used bookstore employees talking about an author I had never heard of.  They quoted one of his books that was too perfect....

“[A]nother important difference between tourist and traveler is that the former accepts his own civilization without question; not so the traveler, who compares it with the others, and rejects those elements he finds not to his liking.”
                              -Paul Bowles, The Sheltering Sky

  • Pictures SOON!

"Fall in love with something everyday."

Just something I heard from a friend in New York. A reminder to appreciate life, and to find beauty where others cannot see it. What did I fall in love with today? This:

Central Perk

I unknowingly agreed to a 7mile bike ride through Central Park. I mostly remember it being hilly and exhausting. But the air was perfect. It was mid March so the air was still crisp. A perfect day for a bike ride! I highly recommend it, it's a fun way to see all of this massive park if you're on a tight schedule!

We biked to the Hudson River afterwards where we watched the sunset. I'll admit, the bike ride to the Hudson was pretty terrifying, and we probably wouldn't have made it alive without our new friend and impromptu bike guide Joe! who also took one for the team and got a bike ticket.

Ended the day bar hopping, drinking wine and catching up with an old friend Abby and I hadn't seen in years, Ashlei! It was a night filled with conversations about life and passions and goals and travels. There's nothing more inspiring than watching someone talk about what it is they're passionate about.

The Alchemist

"The boy knew a lot of people in the city.  That was what made traveling appeal to him - he always made new friends, and he didn't need to spend all of his time with them.  When someone sees the same people everyday... they wind up becoming a part of that person's life.  And then they want the person to change.  If someone isn't what others want them to be, the others become angry.  Everyone seems to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but none about his or her own."

Surfeit

It's a pretty good funny feeling when you already know the word of the day. Or maybe that's just me.

Surfeit (n): excess; an excessive amount

1. An uncomfortably full or crapulous feeling due to excessive eating or drinking.

2. General disgust caused by excess or satiety.

The Diary of Anaïs Nin

“You live like this, sheltered, in a delicate world, and you believe you are living. Then you read a book… or you take a trip… and you discover that you are not living, that you are hibernating. The symptoms of hibernating are easily detectable: first, restlessness. The second symptom (when hibernating becomes dangerous and might degenerate into death): absence of pleasure. That is all. It appears like an innocuous illness. Monotony, boredom, death. Millions live like this (or die like this) without knowing it. They work in offices. They drive a car. They picnic with their families. They raise children. And then some shock treatment takes place, a person, a book, a song, and it awakens them and saves them from death. Some never awaken.”

Catchup

Catchup. Ketchup. Catsup.

  • I'm sitting in my favorite little coffee shop I discovered in the valley, staring at this blank blog page, and getting distracted by all the rings on my fingers as I try to type this.

  • It's been almost a month. And I keep putting off updating this blog because this massive and ever growing collection of photos I've managed to hoard over the past few months has become intimidating.

  • After originally deciding to not go to Thailand, I changed my mind because I made a promise to myself that this year, all decisions I make should be based on whether or not it would be beneficial to me and my photography career.

  • I'm turning into even more of a hippie, and meeting other hippies makes me so happy!

  • I've met so many amazing people in just the past 6 months.  People who inspire me, people who make me laugh, people who share the same weird quirks and interests, people who I can't believe I haven't met sooner!  And it makes me a little sad that now I have to leave them.  Which I've discovered is a pretty recurring theme in my life.

  • A year ago today, I was on my way to London, about to embark upon the trip that would ultimately ignite my wanderlust.

  • I have so many ideas and plans and life updates that I can't wait to share with the world.

  • Life is good. And I couldn't be happier.
